Can I Take Sounder From Everett to Seattle, and Does That Change Which Neighborhood I Should Buy?

Short answer: Yes. You can ride the Sounder N Line from Everett Station to Seattle's King Street Station in about 59 minutes on weekdays, for a $5 adult fare. The catch is the schedule: Sound Transit runs only four N Line trains toward Seattle each weekday morning (6:15, 6:45, 7:15 and 7:45 AM from Everett) and four back in the afternoon (3:45, 4:30, 5:15 and 5:45 PM from King Street). So Sounder can absolutely work, but only if your workday fits that window and your home is an easy drive or walk from a station.

That last part is what changes your home search. With Sounder, the question is less "which city" and more "how many minutes from my front door to Everett, Mukilteo or Edmonds Station?" Below are the current numbers, all pulled on October 12, 2026, from Sound Transit and Redfin.

The three things that trip people up

  • The last train home is 5:45 PM. After that, the backup is Amtrak 518 at 6:00 PM (ORCA monthly pass holders can use it through the Rail Plus program) or the bus.
  • There is no midday or weekend Sounder service on the regular N Line schedule. Sound Transit adds special trains for some events, such as Seahawks home games, but you can't plan a daily commute around those.
  • King Street Station is at the south end of downtown Seattle. If your office is farther north, such as South Lake Union, plan on a connection after you get off the train.

Your backup options from Everett

ST Express 510 bus. On weekday mornings the 510 leaves Everett Station roughly every 15 to 25 minutes from 5:10 to 8:40 AM and runs into downtown Seattle; the 6:05 AM trip reaches 5th Ave and Pine St at 7:06 AM. Afternoon trips leave downtown Seattle from 2:00 to 6:30 PM. The adult fare is $3.00. It takes about as long as Sounder but gives you far more departure times.

1 Line light rail from Lynnwood City Center. Link does not reach Everett yet, but the 1 Line from Lynnwood City Center reaches Westlake in downtown Seattle in about 31 minutes, with trains every 8 minutes during the morning peak. Sound Transit's own Sounder timetable points riders to ST Express routes 510 and 512, which connect to the 1 Line, as the alternate when Sounder service is reduced.

When will light rail reach Everett?

Not soon. Sound Transit lists the Everett Link Extension opening as 2037 to 2041. The plan is 16 miles of track and six stations (West Alderwood, Ash Way, Mariner, SW Everett Industrial Center, SR 526/Evergreen and Everett Station), with an estimated 60-minute ride from Everett to downtown Seattle. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement came out on September 18, 2026, and public comments are open through November 2. If you are buying in 2026, treat Everett Link as a long-term bonus, not part of your commute math.

Does Sounder change which neighborhood you should buy in?

It should, if you plan to ride it most days. Here is how we would think about it:

  1. Measure door-to-platform time first. A 59-minute train ride plus a 20-minute drive and parking is a very different day than the same ride plus a 5-minute walk. Map the drive at 6 AM, not at noon, and check station parking before you write an offer.
  2. Pick the station, then the house. Everett, Mukilteo and Edmonds stations each put you on the same trains, but price points differ a lot (see below). Boarding one or two stops farther south shortens the ride but usually raises the price.
  3. Have a plan B within reach. If your meetings sometimes run past 5:45 PM, a home that is also a short drive to the 510 at Everett Station or South Everett Freeway Station, or to the 1 Line at Lynnwood City Center, protects you on late days.
  4. Be honest about hybrid days. If you only go in two or three days a week, a longer ride may be worth it for more space. If you go in five days a week, minutes matter more.

What homes cost near each Sounder station (Redfin, three months ending September 2026)

CityMedian sale priceChange vs. a year earlier
Everett$574,726Down 6.5%
Mukilteo$962,042Up 2.7%
Edmonds$1,017,344Up 7.1%

These are citywide medians across all home types, so they mix condos, townhomes and houses. A specific home near a station can price very differently. Redfin also showed Everett homes going pending in about 13 days with a 99.7% sale-to-list ratio over the same period, so well-priced homes still move quickly.

The takeaway: Everett gives you the lowest entry price on the N Line, but the longest ride. Edmonds gives you the shortest ride, at roughly the highest price. Mukilteo sits in between on ride time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take Sounder from Everett to Seattle?

Yes. The Sounder N Line runs weekday trains from Everett Station to King Street Station in Seattle, with stops in Mukilteo and Edmonds. The ride takes about 59 minutes and the adult fare is $5.

How many Sounder trains run from Everett each day?

Four Sound Transit trains run toward Seattle each weekday morning (6:15, 6:45, 7:15 and 7:45 AM) and four run back to Everett in the afternoon (leaving King Street at 3:45, 4:30, 5:15 and 5:45 PM), per the schedule valid through March 28, 2027.

Does Sounder run on weekends?

Not on the regular schedule. Sound Transit sometimes adds special N Line trains for big events, such as Seahawks games.

Is the bus faster than Sounder from Everett?

It is about the same in the morning. The ST Express 510's 6:05 AM trip from Everett Station reaches 5th Ave and Pine St in downtown Seattle at 7:06 AM, and the bus runs many more trips, at a $3.00 adult fare.

When does light rail come to Everett?

Sound Transit currently projects the Everett Link Extension to open between 2037 and 2041.

Should I buy near a Sounder station?

If you will ride Sounder most workdays, yes: short, predictable access to Everett, Mukilteo or Edmonds Station matters more than the city name. Also make sure you have a bus or 1 Line backup for late days.
